<p>The <a href="http://www.stopclimatechaos.org" title="Stop Climate Chaos">Stop Climate Chaos Coalition</a> which is more than 100 organisations, from environment and development charities to unions, faith, community and women's groups, wants Gordon Brown to fix COP15 now!</p>
<p>The EU are currently only proposing they reduce their emissions by 20% by 2020 (based on 1990 levels).</p>
<p>Even if all the industrialised nations make a 30% reduction by 2020 we would still be gambling on a 50:50 chance of keeping global warming below the <a href="http://www.stopclimatechaos.org/why-2-degrees-C-so-important" title="Why 2 degrees is so important">2°C</a> danger level.</p>
<p>We need Gordon Brown to:</p>
<ol><li>Unilaterally commit the UK to 42% reductions now. Then go to the rest of the EU heads of state to ask them to move up from their 20% aggregate target, to the tabled 30% levels now.</li>
<li>Publicly declare that he will work to get the rest of the EU to agree to at least 40% reductions collectively as soon as possible.</li>
<li>Ensure that the process of agreeing an international deal will continue under the aegis of the UNFCCC.</li></ol>
<p>The UK must lead by example to inspire a fair global deal that keeps global warming under 2°C and supports those countries least responsible for, and most vulnerable to, climate change.</p>
<p>On Wednesday 20th January the UNFCCC met to discuss COP15, with the result that the deadline of 31st January for countries to commit to emissions reductions, has now been made a 'soft deadline' as a result of so few states committing to reductions.</p>
