The /a<" title="Stop Climate Chaos">Stop Climate Chaos Coalition which is more than 100 organisations, from environment and development charities to unions, faith, community and women’s groups, wants Gordon Brown to fix COP15 now!

The EU are currently only proposing they reduce their emissions by 20% by 2020 (based on 1990 levels).

Even if all the industrialised nations make a 30% reduction by 2020 we would still be gambling on a 50:50 chance of keeping global warming below the 2°C danger level.

We need Gordon Brown to:

1. Unilaterally commit the UK to 42% reductions now. Then go to the rest of the EU heads of state to ask them to move up from their 20% aggregate target, to the tabled 30% levels now.
2. Publicly declare that he will work to get the rest of the EU to agree to at least 40% reductions collectively as soon as possible.
3. Ensure that the process of agreeing an international deal will continue under the aegis of the UNFCCC.

The UK must lead by example to inspire a fair global deal that keeps global warming under 2°C and supports those countries least responsible for, and most vulnerable to, climate change.

On Wednesday 20th January the UNFCCC met to discuss COP15, with the result that the deadline of 31st January for countries to commit to emissions reductions, has now been made a ‘soft deadline’ as a result of so few states committing to reductions.
