(En français ci-dessous)

The CRTC, Canada’s media regulator, has decided to allow Bell Canada, Rogers, Shaw and other Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to impose usage-based billing YOU. These Big Telecom companies are obviously trying to gouge consumers, control the Internet market, and ensure that consumers continue to subscribe to their television services.

This means we’re looking at a future where ISPs will charge per byte, the way they do with smart phones. If we allow this to happen Canadians will have no choice but to pay more for less Internet.

This will crush innovative services, Canada’s digital competitiveness, and your wallet.

UPDATE February 1, 2011: Let me be clear: our Govt is very concerned about CRTC decision & its impact on consumers, small businesses & all Cdns. /2 (via Twitter)

I appreciate all the petitions I’m getting via Twitter re Usage Based Billing but I can’t comment till the appeal period is up. Thx!
