UPDATE 1/31/12: A Honolulu media outlet reports http://bit.ly/yzQxd0 that Rep. Mizuno, after considering the feedback on this bill, is recommending that the bill be killed.
ORIGINAL TEXT: Hawai’i State House Bill No. 2288, as introduced, requires that ISPs retain user data such as subscriber information and “internet destination history”.
“This bill represents a radical violation of privacy and opens the door to rampant Fourth Amendment violations,” says Daniel Leuck, chief executive of Honolulu-based software design boutique Ikayzo, according to CNET. “Even forcing telephone companies to record everyone’s conversations, which is unthinkable, would be less of an intrusion.”
Rep. John Mizuno and all co-sponsors of the bill, as well as sponsors of companion bills in the state Senate, should withdraw the bill.
