This is a simple story:
You probably saw “The Help.”
However you feel about the film, you know it’s been a major success in the United States, grossing over $206 million dollars thus far in the box office, alone.
So, why the petition?
Because Ablene Cooper is a Black woman domestic worker from Mississippi who is Kathryn Stockett’s brother’s former maid. In real life, Ablene Cooper has a gold tooth, cared for a white boy and girl and had a son who died.
In the film, “The Help,” a character named “Aibileen” is played by Viola Davis, has a gold tooth, cares for a white girl and had a son who died.
Author, Kathryn Stockett, says that her book and the film is based on her own maid growing up. I believe that as well; but it doesn’t mean she didn’t snatch details from her brother’s maid to enhance her story. In fact, Kathryn Stockett’s own brother helped Ablene Cooper (not his own sister):
Ablene Cooper sued Kathryn Stockett and I just learned that the case was dismissed due to a STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS (because Ablene Cooper didn’t file suit within a year of receiving a copy of the book)??!!
Ablene Cooper left the courthouse VERY upset, crying and in a rage. It’s sad because she even looks like the character played by Viola Davis:
Come on, Kathryn Stockett… in my book, you owe this real life “Aibileen” so much more than $75,000 and I’m kind of hoping she gets another lawyer and finds a way to make you pay much more. So, before that happens, pay that woman the $75,000 she’s asking for, for goodness sakes. #BeTheHelp
