Pennsylvania’s new voter ID law could take away the voting rights of hundreds of thousands of voters. Governor Corbett’s own secretary of the commonwealth said this week that nearly 10% of Pennsylvania voters—more than 758,000 people—do not have the main form of required ID. That’s more than President Obama’s margin of victory in PA in 2008!

The Republicans in Pennsylvania knew that they couldn’t win the state by playing fair, so they passed the voter ID law to steal it for Mitt Romney. The Republican speaker of the Pennsylvania State House made this clear when he said, “Voter ID, which is going to allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania, done.”

This voter suppression law has an even bigger impact in Philadelphia, where the city’s top election official said that 18% of registered voters there don’t have a qualifying ID. Attorney General Eric Holder condemned these voter ID laws, saying bluntly, “We call this a poll tax.”

Yet 49 years after Pennsylvania ratified the 24th Amendment, which makes poll taxes illegal, Republicans are trying to impose one on Pennsylvanians.
