Speaker Boehner,

It is an insult to science and common decency to have Representative Akin continue on as head of the Science and Technology Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. His complete lack of knowledge on a matter of established scientific truth such as conception is a travesty. His remarks about rape do a disservice to the Republican Party and the entire House in general. As Speaker, I’m sure this is not what you want the GOP associated with.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in an interview posted Sunday. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

It is with a heavy heart that we the undersigned ask for Representative Akin’s removal. We expect better from our elected officials no matter what party they belong to.
