We're a national, nonpartisan nonprofit working to reform the U.S. media. http://www.freepress.net

Politico reported today (http://bit.ly/Vgax1) that for $25,000 to $250,000, The Washington Post was offering lobbyists off-the-record, nonconfrontational access to the paper’s own reporters and editors.

After a flurry of protest on Twitter and across the blogosphere the Post cancelled the events, blaming an overzealous marketing department. Read more about today’s debacle here: http://bit.ly/M1yUS.

Take a minute to thank the Washington Post for canceling these evens and remind them that we need journalism that serves the public interest not corporate interests.

If you are not on Twitter you can call the Washington Post at 703-469-2500.

One of many ways The Washington Post gets social. @tjortenzi and @marksluckie are here to help navigate the news. Send your tips and tweets to @washingtonpost. http://www.washingtonpost.com/

Washington Post Publisher Katharine Weymouth cancelled these events and stated: Absolutely, I’m disappointed. This should never have happened. The fliers got out and weren’t vetted. They didn’t represent at all what we were attempting to do. We’re not going to do any dinners that would impugn the integrity of the newsroom. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/02/AR2009070201563.html
