Pi Kappa Phi is the embodiment of what a fraternity should aspire to be at Duke University. PiKapp’s motto is: “We will lead” – and they undeniably follow through on that promise, with key leaders making important contributions to the university on a day to day basis. But what sets PiKapp apart is that they truly live their lives as Men of Character, Leadership, Scholarship, Service, and Sportsmanship. The new and inclusive social scene that PiKapp strives to build at Duke, the sizable leadership and service contributions that members of Pi Kappa Phi make, and the rich history of PiKapp as an on-campus fraternity since its charter in 1915 are reasons enough to assume that the group already has a dedicated section on Duke’s residential campus. Unfortunately, that is not the case: since PiKapp was rechartered in the midst of the Duke lacrosse scandal, the organization has been privy to the housing moratorium for selective-living groups on Duke’s campus. The addition of themed living groups this year shows that the time is now for innovation in the way residential groups are housed at Duke. Granting Pi Kappa Phi a section on campus would do just that, as the fine group of men would immediately benefit from the living experience that many other less-qualified groups already enjoy, and would be certain to continue to build the new social scene that the University so badly would like to develop as a part of the Campus Culture Initiative. PiKapp was re-chartered just 4 years ago. Imagine what the future holds… PiKapps at Duke: Duke’s newest Young Trustee, Sunny Kantha, is a PiKapp.

DukePikapps, Thank you for voicing your suggestions for how you would like to see Duke’s residential experience improved. Campus Council always welcomes and accepts feedback from all students. As you know, the housing moratorium preventing Selective Living Groups (SLGs) from seeking to establish an on-campus section was implemented in 2002. This directive, which continues to remain in effect, was established by Duke administrators in order to maintain the percentage of West Campus space allocated for SLGs. The goal was to make the residential experience as equitable as possible for Independents and Selectives alike. To learn more about Duke’s residential history, feel free to look through the CC archives, which can be found on our website: duke.edu/cc It is certainly understandable that you may be frustrated by these restrictions, but Campus Council is not currently in a position to, as you have requested, “grant” a West Campus section to yourselves or any other group. We can, however, assure you that you are not alone in seeking to obtain permanent section on campus. While we understand that you would like to make your desire to obtain an official section public through this petition, we would suggest that it would be more constructive for DukePiKapps to send a representative to attend one of our general body meetings during the fall semester. Our meetings are, as always, open to all students. Thank you again for your suggestions and we hope that you, as well as other selective and independent students alike, will continue to suggest changes and improvements that you would like to see implemented in Duke’s residential experience.
