UPDATE BELOW The Human Rights Campaign, the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender organization in the United States, has announced that it will not lobby for Rep. Pete Stark’s “Every Child Deserves a Family Act” until it “gains traction in congress.” This act would bar federal funding to agencies that refuse to allow people to adopt on the basis of their marital status, sexual orientation, or gender identity. In addition to removing barriers to LGBT rights, it would also help reduce the number of children who wind up neglected by the child welfare system to become homeless or caught in the criminal justice system. We demand that the Human Rights Campaign lobby for this act. Verbal support is not enough, by its refusal to lobby for legislation important to the LGBT community because of perceived lack of support (something which is not uncommon for any LGBT-related legislation), it only suggests a lack of true relevance to us. —The Undersigned UPDATE H.R. 3827, despite yours or Stark’s opinion on the matter, is already known to be an LGBT issue, with or without your involvement. We require a clarification of what you mean with this statement: It appears from this statement that you are assuming child welfare professionals trained through a voluntary program are going to go lobby for you. Do you have any specific examples of organizations, such as child welfare organizations, trained by your organization or otherwise, that you know are willing to do this work if you are not willing?

HRC supports all efforts to remove barriers to finding permanent families for children and youth, including H.R. 3827, the Every Child Deserves a Family Act. As Congressman Stark noted, the bill’s chances of success are much greater if it is seen through the lens of helping children and not solely as an LGBT issue. We’re committed to working with child welfare professionals (as we do with our “All Children, All Families” program http://tinyurl.com/ykpcegw) who are the best advocates for building support on Capitol Hill.
